National Peat Depth and Carbon Storage Project

Peat depth datasets?

Penny Anderson Associates are currently working on a new peat project for the North Pennines AONB Partnership's Peatscapes Project (Andy Lloyd) and Natural England (Matthew Shepherd).

This "National Peat Depth and Carbon Storage Project" is tasked with several objectives detailed below, but is concentrating on obtaining any GIS datasets (or maps) that show peat depth.

If you could help provide any datasets that contain peat depth measurements, we would be very pleased to include in the project.

Project Objectives:

Biodiversity convention - Call for Peatland restoration case studies

The Biodiversity Convention Secretariat is holding a major international meeting in Nagoya, Japan at the end of October (COP10 - http://www.cbd.int/cop10/) and among the main issues being discussed is the need for greater effort on habitat restoration and recognition of the ecosystem services that this can provide. Clearly a great opportunity to showcase peatland restoration and we have managed to arrange for Richard Lindsay along with Dr Stefan Hotes to attend on behalf of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme.

IUCN UK Peatland Conference

We would very much welcome peatland restoration practitioners to join the IUCN UK Peatland conference 'Investing in Peatlands - The Climate Challenge' on 28-29 Sep 10 in Durham. As places book up fast, please register soon to avoid disappointment

Dear colleague,

Apologies for crossposting, I would like to make you aware of a new call for research proposals being run by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership, through its Peatscapes peatland restoration project.

PEATBOG project

Dear all,

Exmoor Mire Restoration Project wins Water industry Award

Project wins national flood management award

Structural diversity of heather spp.

Has anyone done work on sampling the structure of heathers (Calluna, Erica cinera & E.tetralix). North of May Moss Bog is a protected site covering nearly 300ha that has not been cut, burnt or grazed for over 40 years.
I thought of laying a transect and measuring stem length, plant diameter in 4 metre plot. Any thoughts
